Ozone layer recovery is on track, helping avoid global warming by 0.5°C

NAIROBI, 9 January 2023 – The ozone layer is on track to recover within four decades, with the global phaseout of ozone-depleting chemicals already benefitting efforts to mitigate climate change. This is the conclusion of a UN-backed panel of experts, presented today at the American Meteorological Society’s 103rd annual meeting. Examining novel technologies such as geoengineering for the first time, the panel warns of unintended impacts on the ozone layer. Read full article

Earth’s ozone layer on course to mend within decades, UN report finds

Release of Greening the Blue 2022 Report

On 14 December 2022 the United Nations’ system launched its latest environmental sustainability report: Greening the Blue Report 2022. This edition of the Report reveals UN entities are accelerating their efforts on environmental governance and environmental training.

Greening the Blue is a UNEP initiative to engage and support the UN System in the transition towards greater environmental sustainability in the management of its facilities and operations.

In alignment with the Strategy for Sustainability Management in the United Nations 2020-2030, Phase I: Environmental Sustainability in the Area of Management, the Greening the Blue Report 2022 provides UN system-wide and entity-level data for 2021 on environmental impact areas: greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, climate neutrality, waste, air pollution, water and wastewater, and biodiversity. As well as management functions: environmental governance, procurement, and human resources.
